COUNSELLING TRAINING FOR COPING WITH STRESS IN COUNSELLING RELATIONSHIP

 

ABSTRACT

This study examined the counselling training for coping with stress in counselling relationship using some selected intern and professional counselors in Ogun State as a case study. Specifically, the study examined aimed at identifying causes of stress among trainee counselor, investigate whether stress can impede counselling relationship between counsellor and client, and establish what kind of counselling services are used by trainee counsellor to manage stress. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 30 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that stress does impede counselling relationship between counsellor and client. Furthermore, counselor’s knowledge on stress management improves counselling relationship. The study recommend counselor educators should provide counselors with the skills of effective stress reduction techniques in order to cope with the high stress associated with people-work.
